Ingredients Breakdown

Valerian

Valerian

Valerian has much scientific research into its sedative properties. It has been used in many cultures for thousands of years to help relieve anxiety, stress and panic, and also to help induce sleep and improve sleep quality. It relaxes the central nervous system by boosting our calming brain signal, GABA, to help promote a restful sleep.

Valerian root has controlled clinical trials (randomised controlled trials) to show it enhances sleep and treats insomnia. In clinical trials it improves sleep onset and the quality and the length of sleep, lowers periods of wakefulness and helps relieve nervous tension and restlessness. Valerian contains ingredients that boost the brain's calming GABA signal, but also to boost one of the brain's sleep signals adenosine.

A number of valerian chemicals are active in the brain and the volatile oil contains the calming valerianal and bisabolene – related to bisabolol in chamomile.

Hop

This is a well-known soporific plant with science to back up its calming and soothing effects. Containing humulene, which is also present in calming hemp, hop has been shown to decrease the time it takes to fall asleep.

Chamomile

Chamomile

Chamomile is another science-backed plant shown to reduce restlessness of mind and body. It's bioactive ingredients α-pinene and bisabolol boost the brain’s calming neurotransmitter GABA.

Widely used in plant medicine in Europe and the Middle-East, as a sedative to promote sleep, to calm and to relieve anxiety and restlessness, especially in children. Clinical trials (randomised controlled trials) confirm the sleep-inducing effects of the essential oil. Chamomile decreases the stress-reaction in the lab and is also anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Lavender

Lavender is one the most studied plants in science today and its benefits include much more than sleep. Its active sleep-inducing ingredient is linalool, which works by blocking the brain’s stimulatory signal glutomate. In clinical trials lavender inhalation improves sleep in several settings as well as improving self-rated sleep quality and energy in students with sleep problems. Lavender also acts to boost the brain's mood-lifting serotonin and dopamine signals.
